Julie Bindel has written another article in which she lambasts trans people and asserts her right (never in question, incidentally) to say horribly offensive things. She doesn't like the expectation of being part of an LGBT "community", it seems.

10/20/08 08:08 am - briarwood - New blog to highlight domestic abuse in Wales

A new blog, "Stories Behind The Stats" founded by Plaid Cymru AM Nerys Evans has just been launched. Ms Evans has worked hard to highlight issues of violence against women in Wales. As the name implies, the blog aims to gather the real life stories behind the statistics, to illustrate that this issue affects all communities and to break the taboo surrounding the subject.

The blog in question is here: http://storiesbehindthestats.blogspot.com/

It's so good to have some positive news to report!

8/19/08 07:27 pm - quentinwrites - Calling Feminist Mothers

I have been left in charge of a blog I am a contributor to named Mothers For Women's Lib. The point of it is to be a group blog for biological, adoptive, step and foster mothers who are also feminists, but it has ground to a halt after a shaky start a couple of months and now I am looking for new contributors.

So if you are a feminist and you have kids, I’d love to hear from you. You can either become a permanent contributor or an occasional submitter, whichever you would prefer to be.

If you don’t fit the criteria, I’d really appreciate it if you’d spread the word anyway. There is a serious lack of resources for feminist parents outside of LiveJournal and I believe a blog which addresses the unique issues which affect women who are both feminists and parents would be very useful in filling this gap.

Thanks for your time! :D

7/26/08 06:11 pm - amikae - Feminist Book Recommendations.

After regularly reading requests for feminist book recommendations I've decided to create a community for that very purpose.

fem_library

The Feminist Library is a community in which members can recommend books to others. With the use of the tags and memory feature it is hoped that it will eventually provide a resource to the countless requests for book recommendations on feminist sites.

Books do not have to be explicitly feminist, just be of interest to some one with 'feminist ethics.' By this we mean it may have a strong female role model, show gay families in a positive light, include strong characters of colour (not just token references) or positively present children doing things that are gender non conformist. This community was mainly set up for people looking for books for their children and teenagers who were disappointed with many of the themes and messages in the books aimed at those age groups. However it is open to books aimed at any age group.

Both Fiction and Non-Fiction can be posted as long as they have a feminist message and are tagged correctly.

MPs reject 20 week abortion limit

An attempt to cut the 24-week upper limit for abortions to within the first 20 weeks of a pregnancy has been rejected overwhelmingly by MPs.

Tory MP Nadine Dorries' proposed cut was defeated by 332 votes to 190. MPs also voted down plans for a 12 or 16 week limit.

4/15/08 09:18 pm - quentinwrites - Just a quick question

Does anyone have a list/know of a list of the universities/colleges in the UK which offer courses in Women's Studies or Gender Studies? I'm trying to find out if there's one within commuting distance of me.

1/24/08 12:03 am - littleorangecat - Daily Mail view on 5 murdered prostitutes

Repost.
This is the charming Daily Mail columist, Richard Littlejohn's take on the murder of 5 prostitutes in Ipswich.

"It might not be fashionable, or even acceptable in some quarters, to say so, but in their chosen field of “work”, death by strangulation is an occupational hazard. That doesn’t make it justifiable homicide, but in the scheme of things the deaths of these five women is no great loss. They weren’t going to discover a cure for cancer or embark on missionary work in Darfur. The only kind of missionary position they undertook was in the back seat of a car."

Not to mention,

"These five women were on the streets because even the filthiest, most disreputable back-alley “sauna” above a kebab shop wouldn’t give them house room. The men who used them were either too mean to fork out whatever a massage parlour charges, or simply weren’t fussy. Some men are actually turned on by disgusting, drug-addled street whores. Where there’s demand, there’ll always be supply.”

Please, Please, Please write and complain! Repost this everywhere you can think of. I don't care if you live in a different country! I will be reposting this on every feminist web board, community, group and book shop I can think of. If I can get his address I will also do the same with that.

If you consider this spam then I'm truly sorry. I'm so angry about this I can't even form a coherent argument about it.

1/23/08 08:38 pm - quentinwrites - Blogosphere

I've just had a pretty heft clearout of my blogroll, as so many feminist bloggers have gone on to other things. Den Of The Biting Beaver and reSISTERance have both gone invite-only and despite my best efforts to contact both of them, I've gotten nowhere, which is a shame as they were two of my favourites! Now I'm going through my Google Reader feeds to take out the ones which are dead. I seem to be being left with very little on the blogroll or the feeds.

So tell me what your favourite feminist blogs are these days. I'm most interested in UK feminist and radical feminist bloggers but if there's someone who doesn't fit either of those categories who you think I should check out, please don't hesitate to mention them too. I'm always after some new recommendations in the feminist blogosphere!

It's probably been there forever - or at least since the last time I went. But I thought it might be of interest that the Tate Modern has a room dedicated to Guerrilla Girls posters.
